The recipe is similar to a typical German chocolate cake, but with one major difference: caramel custard icing is used instead of the traditional frosting and filling.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups sugar, divided
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter, divided
  • . 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease a bundt pan with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • Combine 1 cup sugar, 2 cups flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  • In a medium bowl, stir eggs with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and remaining sugar until completely smooth.
  • Stir egg mixture into dry ingredients with a rubber spatula until batter is smooth.
  • Stir in 1 cup buttermilk and 1 cup water. Stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter until completely incorporated. Stir in chopped pecans.
  • Spoon batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 1 hour 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  • Invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Invert the cake onto a serving plate and remove it from the pan. Drizzle with caramel custard icing.
